Chick crowns breeding season at Essex zoo

A YOUNG PAIR of Victoria crowned pigeons (Goura victoria) have hatched their first ever chick at Colchester Zoo. Staff at the zoo have been on tenterhooks, as the species, which is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, is known to have erratic parenting skills.

THE UK’S ONLY black stork (Ciconia nigra) chicks are currently being hand-reared at Chester Zoo. Keeper Amy Vercoe said: “The stork eggs were abandoned by their parents and so we stepped in to take care of them.

A BADLY ABUSED snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) called Queen has been nursed back to health
by staff at a new bird-of-prey centre near Stourbridge in Staffordshire, after having a
wing amputated.

Great white egrets (Ardea alba) are nesting in the UK for the first time. A round-the-clock protection programme at Natural England's Shapwick Heath nature reserve in Somerset is guaranteeing that the nesting pair is not disturbed by egg thieves.
