Specialist judges booked to boost Bengalese and budgerigar classes

Section-winners-2012A SCOTTISH BIRD club aims to revive the Bengalese finch and budgerigar sections at its 130th open show.

Markinch Ornithological Society (OS) Cage Bird Section has experienced a steady decline of exhibits in its Bengalese classes since 1998, partly due to none of its club members keeping and exhibiting this species. In a bid to attract exhibitors, this year it has booked top judge and breeder Liz Murray from Dumfries. Officials also hope to see more budgerigars benched, with specialist judge, John Newall, engaged.

Other judges include Phil Anthony for the zebra finches and Tom Broderick in the foreign bird section. Mr Broderick last judged at Markinch for its 125th annual show.

Publicity officer Sheila Renwick told Cage & Aviary Birds: “Markinch OS was formed in 1873 and the first annual show was held in December of that year. The show was not held during the war years and was revived in 1947.

“At one time there were about 15 cage bird clubs in Fife, but due to a lack of members they have all folded and Markinch is the only one still surviving. So, it is really important that we celebrate our 130th annual show.”

Monthly bird sales and a £500 community grant from Fife Council have helped fund the show and more than £900 in prize money is available. A trophy will be awarded to the best bird in each section.

Bengalese judge Liz Murray added: “I’m delighted to judge the Bengalese section. It promises to be a great event and an opportunity to revive the once-strong Bengalese section.

“It would be fantastic if as many Bengalese fanciers as possible could bench their birds. An entry of 50 pairs would be brilliant and help achieve good Scottish Bengalese Fanciers Association and National Bengalese Fanciers Association patronage awards for future shows.”

The 130th open show takes place on November 5 at Victoria Hall, Main Street, Coaltown of Balgonie, Glenrothes, Fife KY7 6HS.
