MAJOR BIRD FOOD company Johnston & Jeff has endorsed Mid Essex Budgerigar Society’s (BS) strong incentives to entice juniors to its September silver patronage open show.
Every junior exhibitor will receive a 3kg pack of Johnston & Jeff Expert Budgerigar seed on top of the following list, provided by the club in its bid to support junior participation:
■ complimentary budgerigar donated by a club member;
■ show cage from Brian Tanner Cages to the junior section winners;
■ junior rosettes to be extended (along with prize money) from third to fifth place (total prize money £140);
■ Haith’s vouchers for the winners of the any age (AA) and young bird (YB) junior sections, as well as a 20kg bag of Countrywide Seed Society Blend to the second-placed AA and YB junior winner.
An allocation of show cages will also be available to lend to junior exhibitors either exhibiting for the first time or wishing to enter more birds.
Sponsorship secretary Graham Paine said: “We have made some big steps to make our 2017 show one of the biggest in financial reward in the country, and on top of the incentives each of the five sections including the juniors will be awarded £140 of individual prize money out of a total fund of £1,000 – nearly £700 more than last year’s show.
“Many clubs make a token junior cash gesture as they feel that from past experience that very few juniors will enter. But we have to find a way of encouraging youth into our hobby and that is why the committee at Mid Essex BS have decided to raise the bar.”
He continued: “And if a junior would like to participate in showing for the first time, we will offer help and guidance into preparation of their birds, even on the day of the show by arrangement.”
Currently, the club has interest from six exhibiting juniors, but aims to get into double figures with further promotion.
Chris Grange, commercial manager at Johnston & Jeff, said: “It’s such a pleasure to see Mid Essex BS doing something so positive to bring more juniors into the fancy, and the club’s example should be followed by all.”
