THREE WELL-KNOWN BUDGERIGAR fanciers, who have stimulated the hobby in the North East over four decades, have been recognised for their services.
At the Northern Budgerigar Society (NBS) AGM earlier this month, Gaile Clark, the 2017 president, presented 40-year long service awards to Charlie & Margaret Bowman from Gateshead, and Raymond Rogerson from Morpeth. It marks only the second time that these awards have been presented by the club.
All three were commended for their achievements, not only within the club but also throughout the country.
Chairman Adrian Richards said: “Charlie & Margaret Bowman, or ‘Mr & Mrs Budgerigar’, have shown continued support to local clubs and the NBS.
“They have done more for the North East than anyone I know, and have kept local clubs full of enthusiasm at meetings and shows.
“Both have shown the attitude of ‘just do it’ and ‘do your best’. Since I can remember, almost every year they have spoken at our club meetings.”
Mr Richardson continued: “These two are the best-respected people in budgerigars in the North East and have achieved nearly everything, including best young bird in show at the BS Club Show.”
Mr Bowman, who turns 86 in July, has held a string of official roles since he joined the hobby in 1967. Key positions include being twice president of the NBS; former president of Newcastle BS; president of Gateshead BS and the 2014/15 president of the BS.
Former NBS president Mr Rogerson is the third fancier to receive the club’s 2017 prestigious award for 40-years service to local clubs and the NBS, having originally joined the NBS in 1965.
Mr Richardson said: “Raymond has assisted in helping with every event the NBS has held over recent years, and is the first to offer birds for the NBS auction or raffle prizes for our annual open days.
“His local clubs Newcastle BS & Gateshead BS have held gold patronage for many years and he has assisted as their show manager to produce a successful gold Budgerigar Society show.”
